Custom Excel Formatting Solutions

11. Special format

Excel uses the term "special format" to describe predefined number formats designed for particular kinds of data, such as Social Security numbers, phone numbers, and ZIP codes. Under the Format Cells dialog box, you can access these formats.

There are different four types in special format:

A. ZIP Code

A ZIP code in Excel's "Special format" refers to standard number formats created especially for USPO codes. The accurate display of ZIP codes, including leading zeros, is made possible by these formats.

B. ZIP Code + 4

U.S. postal codes with nine digits, separated by a space, are displayed using the ZIP Code + 4 format.

This format is useful for more precise mail delivery and is supported directly in Excel’s Special number formatting options.

 C. Phone number

Excel's Special formatting allows you to format integers like 6845236524 so that they look as (684) 523-6524.

D. Social security number

12. Custom format

Excel's custom formats let you adjust the appearance of text, numbers, dates, and other values in cells without altering the data itself.
